Radio Drama Troupe Honors Texas Writers Month

AUSTIN, TX (PRWEB) April 23, 2006

The Violet Crown Radio Players, Austin’s original radio drama recreation troupe, will cap their 2005-2006 season with new episodes of their original serials, “The Adventures of Sailor Steve Costigan,” and “Molly McCoy: The WASP.” The Players recreate the feel of the golden age of radio drama, complete with live sound effects, vintage costumed actors, and a hot swing band. All shows are held at the Hideout Theatre, 617 Congress Ave., on May 4-7, and May 12-13, 2006. The May 7 performance is a 3 p.m. matinee. All other performances will be at 8 p.m. Seats are $ 15 at the door, or $ 12.50 in advance at violetcrownradio.com.

The Players completely immerse audiences in the vintage experience from the moment they walk through the door with antique radio equipment and posters, actors in character interacting with guests in the “studio,” and the retro sounds of the Violet Crown Radio Orchestra, a swing band.

Once the show is under way, the troupe magically creates a rich aural landscape using everyday materials for live sound effects. Crowded nightclubs, dogfighting warplanes, and raucous prizefights are brought to life using ingenious and unexpected items.

“Molly McCoy: The WASP,” is an adventure serial that follows the exploits of a spy-busting WWII aviatrix stationed at Texas’ own Avenger Field. “The Adventures of Sailor Steve Costigan,” adapts a series of Robert E. Howard’s humorous short stories. Sailor Steve is a

world-traveling, prizefighting sailor with “a heart of gold and a head full of rocks.” May’s episode is a classic tale of boxing, mix-ups, and double-crosses.

“It’s no accident that we’re featuring Sailor Steve Costigan in May,” said Creative Director Mark Finn. “This show is in honor of Texas Writers Month, as well as Robert E. Howard’s Centennial.” Howard (1906-1936) is best known as the creator of Conan the Barbarian, so much so that the character has eclipsed his other writing. “Robert was a

Texan, and he wrote in the tall tale tradition,” said Finn, who has written the first book-length biography of the author in over twenty years. “These Costigan stories are great for a couple of reasons. They’re really funny in that over-the-top Texas way, and they showcase a different side of the creator who is associated with so serious a character as Conan.”
